For twenty years the rule in enterprise software was clear. Own the system of record and you win. Be the database that everything else has to talk to. Salesforce for customers, the job system for work, the practice tool for matters. It was sticky, valuable, and hard to leave. Now the most serious investors are saying that era is ending. Andreessen Horowitz framed it plainly: the system of record is slipping into the background as what they call a commodity persistence tier. The value is moving up.
Why the database is losing primacy
The system of record was valuable for a structural reason. A person could only look in one place at a time, so the data had to be gathered into one place, and whoever owned that place owned the workflow. AI removes the constraint. A model can read across every system at once, structured and unstructured, and reason over the whole picture. The gravity shifts from where the data sits to what can reason across it. The database becomes infrastructure. The reasoning layer becomes the product.
What a system of intelligence actually is
A system of intelligence is the layer that pulls from every system of record, becomes the one place a person goes for context and action, and increasingly treats the underlying databases as plumbing consumed through an API. It does not just store the work. It understands it and takes the next step. This is the same idea N+1 has been calling operating intelligence, arrived at from the inside rather than the outside.
Own the system of intelligence that reasons across the records, and the record becomes a commodity beneath you.
Why incumbents cannot simply switch
The incumbents see it. Salesforce and the rest are racing to put an intelligence layer inside their own walls so a third party cannot reconstruct the customer’s business outside their interface. They have an advantage in their own data. But they are built around one record. The operator who runs the actual work sits above all of them at once, and that vantage point is hard to buy back.
What it means if you run a real business
It means the question is no longer which system of record you sit on. It is whether you own the layer that reasons across them. For a service business that layer is built by doing the work, capturing the data, and codifying the workflow until the records below are just inputs. The businesses that own the system of intelligence in their category will capture the value the database used to.
